Rewarding Rides 2013. Washington D.C. to Lakewood, Ohio

  • Boarding the Amtrak train in Cleveland at 1:45am on May 7th.

  • Overcoming one of many obstacles along the ride. Climbing over fallen trees blocking the C&O trail.
  • The beautiful mountainous terrain in the distance and Potomac River below. Four straight days of thunderstorms to begin the ride caused flooding along the trail. This made us navigate mountainous roads as a detour. Extremely difficult but the views were worth it.
  • We met three seniors from Catholic University of America at a bike shop in Hancock, Maryland. We rode with them for the remainder of the day and camped with them near Paw Paw, WV.
  • Four days of Thunderstorms were followed by two days of below freezing temperatures forcing us to seek overnight shelter indoors. The Trail Inn in Frostburg, MD.
  • The Mason Dixon Line. Goodbye Maryland, Hello Pennsylvania.
  • The Eastern Continental Divide. Began riding at sea level in Washington DC and reached 2,392 feet above sea level at this point.
  • We were the first riders from Cleveland, Ohio to stop in the Meyersdale, PA Historical Society so were able to 'place the pin'.
  • The second night of below freezing temperatures forced us to seek refuge in Ohiopyle, PA.
  • Leaving Ohiopyle, PA and riding the 77 miles to Pittsburgh, PA
  • Entering the Pittsburgh area.
  • We made it to Pittsburgh! Next stop, Cleveland.
  • After 8 days, we finally made it to Ohio.
  • Our last stop before heading home to Lakewood was Kent State University.
  • We made it home to Lakewood. Posing at the gazebo at Lakewood Park.
